The Golden Globe for best actor in a TV movie or
miniseries went to Irish actor Jonathan Rhys-Meyers for his
portrayal of the King of Rock 'n' Roll in the CBS mini
series "Elvis."
Rhys-Meyers beat out a field of film veterans including
Kenneth Branaugh, Ed Harris, Donald Sutherland and Bill
Nighy.
Interviewed on Morning Ireland on RTE Radio, Jonathan
said that he was shocked when he heard his name being called
out and everything was a blur and a haze, it did not really
sink in and all he could do was kiss his girl friend and
hope that he did not trip on the steps on the way up to
accept the award. He is the first Cork born actor to win a
Golden Globe Award.
Jonathan said that he was apprehensive about
playing Elvis and credited his P.A. Peter Stewart for all
the encouragement he gave him. He said that he was amazed
when he heard that 30 million viewers had watched the mini
series when it was aired on CBS Television late last year in
America. He also compared wining the award like scoring the
winning goal for Arsenal in the cup final.
In his acceptance speech he thanked everyone that helped
him during the making of the film he also thanked his Mum
and Dad.
At the party later on in the evening Jonathan said he was
overwhelmed when such Hollywood luminaries as Jamie Fox and
Steven Spielberg came up to congratulate him. His latest
film Match point in which he plays a tennis player and is
directed by Woody Allen has just been released and is also
tipped to receive an Oscar nomination.
Jonathan next project is the new Mission Impossible film
and he is also to star in Robin Williams new film.
So congratulations to Jonathan from all the Irish Elvis
fans and we look forward to seeing his award winning
portrayal of The King when it is aired on this side of the
Atlantic.
