Glenn Lee dies suddenly
It is with great sadness that I have to report the sudden death of my good
friend Glen Lee. Well known in Elvis circle's and for his fantastic charitable
work, and in particular his long relationship with Beaumont Hospital Radio where
for many year's his well known voice and musical expertise could be heard over
the airways of Dublin City, Glenn will be sadly missed by all his family and
friends R.I.P.
PATIENT BROADCASTER TUNES INTO HIS NICHE
The following article was written by Pat O'Rourke and
appeared in the "Northside - Express"
FIFTEEN
years ago, Northsider Glen Lee found the cure to his
yearnings to get into broadcasting he joined Beaumont
Hospital Radio.
(Glenn Lee on the left pictured in the studio with George Twamley and Rocky O'Brien)
Finglas man Glen, who is originally from Ballybough,
joined the station when it first went on air in
September 1988 and is now its longest serving
broadcaster.
When you delve into Glen's background, it's perhaps not
surprising that he ended up back in hospital, so to
speak. At the age of two he was diagnosed with with
tuberculosis (TB) and spent the next twelve years in
Cappagh Hospital. he even made his confirmation and
communion in hospital.
It was a difficult time but you just got on with it
recalls Glen, "I suppose I was destined to end up back
in Hospital. I was looked after very well there and I
see this as a way as giving something back (he works at
the radio station on a voluntary basis) "The station
provides a vital service and is a great communicator
between patients and the outside world" he adds
Glen currently broadcasts three hours a day (11am-2pm)
five days a week on Beaumont Hospital Radio 89.5 FM.
From Monday to Wednesday, he presents Country Classics',
which consists of a light country and Irish music mix
along with the Broadcaster's own touch of magic, On
Thursday he presents Golden Oldies' show and Friday,
it's the show he Loves the most 'Remember the King', a
tribute to Elvis Presley.
Glen says: "According to The Irish Elvis Presley Fan
Clubs website, this is the only show of its kind in
Europe to broadcast three hours of Elvis every week. I
absolutely love doing it."
Prior to joining
Beaumont Hospital Radio, Glen was with a number of
pirate stations where he was bitten by the broadcasting
bug. His first show on Beaumont Hospital Radio was on
Saturday afternoons from 2pm-5pm. The show became so
popular so quickly that he was asked if he wanted to
switch his show to a weekday morning slot. "I jumped at the chance and
haven't looked back since," he says.

Throughout Glen's 15
years at the Northside hospital, he has worked as part
of a team of volunteers who have made the station a huge
success. In that time, he has also been credited with
inspiring many young men and women, who started their
broadcasting careers as volunteers and are now involved with local
and national broadcasters.
Although Beaumont
Hospital Radio is not officially means tested by the
JNLR figures, it is known locally that Glen has an avid
listnership every weekday morning. His ongoing commitment to the Station is renowned
through out the hospital and the surrounding areas of
Arlane, Coolock and Beaumont.
Glen Lee's charisma
has helped to brighten up many a patient's day in the
last 15 years and through his shows he's aiming to add
his own brand of therapy for the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately in December 2006 when returning from a
charity show Glenn became suddenly ill and passed away.
